Rinsing filters

I have had matala filters installed in my skippy for about 4 to 5 weeks now and rinsed them today by dumping pond water into the skippy and draining it out the bottom.
I'm just wondering how often you do this. I've seen websites say once or twice a week and some that say to go for quite a bit longer. I thought it best to ask the collective people with experience. So, how often do you back wash your filter media?

I think the correct answer would be- Do it as needed. Are the Matalas bio-media or mechanical? If just mechanical, not as much care is needed. If it is both or bio, different story. If there is any blockage in flow, then swish them around in a tub of pond water or pump (or even dump buckets of)pond water on them to rinse them out. If you have personal well water that's not treated with chlorine, just use that if it's not extremely cold. If the flow is really intense like a harsh spray, you could possibly remove some bacteria, but most will cling. Use just enough "force" to remove the gook.
