Do I need to drain my pond for winter?

I installed an 120 gallon raised pond this summer. I purchased a pre-formed liner tub and buried about 6" and about 18" is above ground, surrounded by natural stone. No fish or plants are in the pond, just a small pump for the waterfall. I don't treat the water with anything, except for a mosquito dunk.

I plan to remove the pump for winter storage, but I was wondering if I need to drain the water? If the water completely freezes, will it crack the liner? Any other general maintenance I should know?

Please give me all the pros & cons since I'm new to caring for a pond feature. Thanks

Shelli

I would drain it. In your zone the water will freeze and expand, possibly damaging the liner. You will need to cover it to keep trash and snow melt out, too. That is messy to clean out in the spring.
