Cliff and Joann, Question re your filtration

I am interested in your filtration system. Although I don’t have a bottom drain, I think I can utilize a different sort of gravity fed intake positioned in the deepest part of the pond that may work in a similar fashion, perhaps a retro drain or something homemade.

Anyway, I am assuming you are using a Rubbermaid or similar tub to hold your layers of filter media. I have studied the diagrams you have on your website, but the one thing that puzzles me is how you keep the filter media pads standing upright in the tub. Did you make some sort of frame to hold them?

Hi Nancy,
We cut the sides off (the long sides) of plastic milk crates to fit the width of the tubs. Then we wrap the various filter material around the milk crate sleeves.
We use quilt batting, and a pad that we got from the
rental store (Pads that fits on the bottom of floor sanding machines -- used to sand the floors)
We also use Easter grass (the kind that you buy in the spring to fill the easter baskets) We stuff grass between
two of the milk carton sleeves.

And they fit firmly enough against the sides of the tubs to stand upright? They don't fall over from the pull of the pumps?

yes, they stand up fine...If they're not tight enough, they can always be shimmed tighter with extra material on the sides.

Excellent! Thanks!
