Hi Frogged. I wouldn't worry about the hair algae. If you don't have string algae this year it's because your pond is in balance and there is no food for the hair algae to eat. If you have a good bio-filter, you'll never have to worry about hair algae or suspended algae. We've been making our own for years and since we made this specific type of filter, we never have algae of any kind in our ponds. Of course, we do have a nice blanket of algae along the sides of our pond but that is quite normal. This algae helps to filter the water and is good for the fish to eat because it is high in Vitamin C and acts as a natural colour enhancer. It's when these algaes go out of control that we have to worry. Also, if you have noticed, people with hair algae in their ponds have crystal clear water. LOL That's because the hair algae is starving the suspended algae of food because it eats so much of the nutrients that are being produced in the pond.
