| Hello Ponders,
With fall coming soon, I am getting a few things together in readiness for the falling leaves and colder weather. I do have a couple questions though. I know we want to remove all the leaves from lilies, and other plants from the pond before winter. But what exactly do I do with the hornwort? Do I pull it all out or can it overwinter in the pond without causing any troubles with the fish? Also is it best to cut the stems of marginals just ABOVE the water level or below? I have Pickerel Weed, Arrowhead, Bog Bean, and Pennywort along the edges. Thanks to all,

Hey Vickie. In your zone you can just weight the hornwort down with a brick and sink it to the bottom. In the spring it will show lots of new growth. As for the others, it is best to leave some above the surface. Some one in your zone may have other advice.

Thanks, sleepless. I appreciate it. I'd just bought HW this past spring and wasn't sure what to do with it. :)

If the hornwort is long, trim them down to an inch or two, and for ease in the spring you can put them all together in a pot and put in the bottom of the pond. Trimming them down will minimise rot, as those stems will die off.

Hi. I have buckets of hornwort in my pond at the moment. Ive already hauled some of it out earlier this summer, as it seemed to take up too much space from the goldies to swim. Thanks in advance.

As far as I know, yes you should trim them down and get rid of any excess, or it will rot and bring down your water quality in winter. In spring, you'll have to bring up back up closer to the surface, and it should grow up taller again. :) That's good that you have lots of it! It's a great oxygenator.

Thanks a lot, Serenae. I had no idea, as last summer I only had very little of it as my pond was brand new. My goldies are very grateful you told me :-D Take care,

If you have an aquarium, you can winter the hornworth indoors. I have two 30 gallon aquarium which I will be using to over winter my pond plants. might even bring some fish from the pond in.
