Too late in the year?

I am beginning the adventure of my first pond. I've waited 15 years for this, so I'm really excited. I don't want to let the excitement cause me to make avoidable mistakes, though.

The weather later this week is going to be really nice, especially for this time of the year. What do you think about digging the hole and getting the liner in? I thought I could fill the pond 1/2 way or 2/3 or 3/4 of the way and then let it collect rain water until spring. I thought this would also give it a chance to start collecting microbial life, although it won't be doing anything much in our seasonal weather. I wouldn't add plants until spring, of course.

Thanks in advance for your answers. I'm almost done reading through the archives and I've learned a lot. I have a word processor document full of copied and pasted nuggets of advice that I want to be able to refer to this spring.
