Magnetic Water Clarifier....waste of money?

So, I'm passing the time until spring cruising pond forums and online pond sellers dreaming about all the things I want to do with the pond when the weather warms up when I came across a contraption made by Laguna called a magnetic water clarifier. They are going anywhere from $10 to $50 on ebay.

It is supposed to reduce lime scale build up on UV lights. Since I just invested a rather large sum of money on a new pressurized filter with an internal UV light, I was wondering if this magnetic clarifier thing will help protect my investment or be just a big old waste of money. As the UV light inside the filter is not easily accessible, I'd like to do anything I can to keep the maintenance needed on the UV light down...including keeping lime scale build up at a minimum. Any input would be very much appreciated.

I have never used a magnetic water clarifier so can't speak from experience, but I do have an opinion. I am always skeptical of ideas that cannot be logically explained. The magnet deal relies on faith, not logic. If you base a lot of decisions on faith you might give it a try. I base my decisions on logic, so I won't. it just doesn't make sense to me.

Don't know if you have seen the commercials that say why spend hundreds of dollars on a water softener and salt when you can by (don't remember the product name). Anyway, I think this works off of the same principle. I don't trust something like that so I will stick with my water softener. I know that works and the philosophy behind it.

Thanks for the feedback! I guess I should be realizing by now that there are no real shortcuts in ponding & gimmicks usually are just that - gimmicks - that don't work. Better to just do it right & disassemble my filter, take out the UV lamp periodically and clean the quartz sleeve properly.

Thanks again! Jenny
