overwintering my 1 year old lotus indoors

Please help!!! I have a lotus that I started from seed this past spring living in a 3-gallon container. It has been outside through several nights of frost but the water hasn't frozen, the leaves have turned brown and it seems to be going dormant. I have read the best thing is to put the whole pot into a cool garage or basement but I don't have a place like that to keep it. I'm wondering whether I can't keep the plant in the fridge in a smaller jar. If so, do I cut off the leaves? Roots? Do I keep it just moist in sand with some antifungus powder or keep it in a jar of water? I really don't want my baby to die this winter! Thanks for any advice.
