Hi, I'm a total newby to this forum, although not to That Home Site. We've had a kettle-type tabletop garden/waterfall for many years now. It's a nice design and we always get compliments on it. The pump has always been the biggest problem. I recently renovated the garden completely and replaced the pump (80 gph). It is too noisy. I thought that I could solve the problem by lowering the pump, but apparently not. Does anyone have any good experiences with pumps this size? Thanks.

Hi steve, I recently got a table-top fountain and was really disappointed that the pump was so loud. but I took it all apart (the fountain), and opened up the pump and manually spun the propeller thing around. I put it back together, and it was much quieter. Be sure your pump is set on the recommended speed too. Is it possible that the pump is touching something that's making it vibrate too much? Sometimes just playing around with it for a little bit seems to change its noise level. what kind of tabletop thing do you have? I have 2 of them. One is called "Half moon" and has a piece of slate hanging with water running down it, onto river rocks, and the other one is a bell fountain. They're really nice to have around. If you can't fix the noise level of the pump, I would return it and try another one.

Thanks for the comments, Catherine. We have had this fountain for about 15 years or more. It was made by Maryland Aquatic Plants (I think that's the name) which is north of Baltimore. It's a large kettle-type with ceramic balls, a pumic-stone formation, and plants. It's basically hydroponic. I went through about 4 different pumps intially, and then ended up with one that was quiet for a long time, but it wasn't very strong. You could hardly tell if there was any water coming out. Because of the need to do a thorough cleaning and replace some plants, i recent completely disassembled it, cleaned everything, replaced the plants and the pump. Without going into too much detail, I'll say that this pump is sensitive to several things like water level, position, etc. I'm trying to find out if there is a clear favorite as far as noise level, for 80 gph pumps. Most of them claim to be quiet, but I've yet to find any consumer reviews of the pumps. Purchasing the pump is not the issue, it's the effort required to replace it in the fountain. So unless I find a recommendation here or elsewhere, I'll probably order the one that seems to have the most convincing write-up. Thanks again.
