| A co-worker's husband has a fish pond. I gave him a bunch of my babies, including one I've mentioned, Bones. He had borrowed two 55 gallon tanks to set up in the basement so he could bring the fish in for the winter.
Yesterday I asked her how they were doing and she told me they were all dead. He works out of town and she cares for them during the week. Last week she got home from work and went out to check on them and they were all motionless in the water. She stuck her finger in the water to push one to see if it was alive and she got a shock. She called her husband and he told her to unplug the underwater light. Sure enough. That was the culprit. Over the next 36 hours they all died: first the small ones, then the next morning the medium ones, then that night the large ones. So.. this is a lesson. I don't know the brand of light. I sure do feel badly for him. I know how much he liked his fish. Anne |

| pashta_, sorry to here of your friends fish loss. Was the light fixture that was in the tank plugged into a GFCI controlled receptacle? "Horton" |

| Horton, The co-worker didn't know if it was plugged into a GFCI receptacle. I talked to an electrician about this and his opinion was that if the light was just leaking (this is my word, not his - he probably used a more technical word) electricity, and had not shorted out, a GFCI might not have helped. That may be why the co-worker just got a shock and not killed from it. I don't know. I just know all those babies (now grown up) are dead. Yes, Helen, my co-worker was fortunate she wasn't injured. | How sad and how scary. Its a good reminder to check out the lights if possible. I've had lights go out because the seal was breeched but there was never a "tingle"of a power leak. What would the difference be? Sandy |
