Using a metal container for a mini-pond

I'm looking to start a second container water garden. My mom's boyfriend has some containers he can give me. The most attractive in terms of size and shape, and appearance, is a galvanized metal (not sure if it's tin or steel) tub.

Previously, I had a container water garden in a metal container, and the water had a basically constant, oily-seeming sheen on top (even if I skimmed it every day), that I think was from the container leaching metals into the water. The problem went away when I replaced the metal container with a large glazed clay pot.

So, I'm wondering if anyone else has had problems with a metal container pond leaching strange things into the water, et cetera, and/or has advice on what to do about it. Or would I be better off with one of the other containers he had, instead? (a ceramic or glazed clay pot that's a little smaller than I'd prefer, or a ~5 gallon plastic bucket) (I'm pretty broke, so buying a better container isn't really an option...)
