| Hi All,
I had to move to a new house because my old house had a sinkhole, and I brought all of my pond components with me to the new house after adopting-out my fish. My old Pond was 1,200 gallons, the skimmer has a 9 inch weir and the biofalls has a 19 inch weir, both parts I was hoping to re-use. Now the problem, I wanted a bigger pond. When the backhoe man finished, the new hole is 9,000 gallons, meaning I appear to need a 4,500 gph pump, which I plan to buy. The problems are 1. Will my skimmer and biofalls work with this much water flow? My skimmer mechanical filters used to gunk up with debris fast, so I assume at 4,500 gph the skimmer will gunk up and stop the water flow about every 2 days. What can I do so I only have to clean out the skimmer once a week? Problem 2. Will the biofalls weir handle 4,500 gph? Do I have to build the falls extra wide and deep compared to my old one in order to handle this much water flow? If this much water had come through my old falls, half of it would have splashed out on the ground! I have a sense that I have to engineer the system in a different way to handle so much water flow compared to my old pond, but I am not sure where to start. I do plan to buy a super high efficiency pump (external). Any helpful comments out there about handling this much higher water flow? Barboli Clearwater, FL |

| I'm no pro... but these are my thoughts. (Just had 600 people come and see my pond set-up (Pond tour)). What I have come to appreciate. 1. Perhaps you have a possibility of having TWO falls with TWO 4500 GPH systems (external is THE way). My understanding is it would be beneficial that the pond turned over once an hour. 2. Have the plumbing below and Incorporate a settlement chamber set-up. What you design into the front end of the job (SC will capture a MAJOR part of the gunk that flows through system), will save you time and effort when it is running. 3. Bottom drains Bottom drains Bottom drains > Connect 1 pump from each BD to run through SC to Biofilter water falls. Check out the surface skimmer types for a better look to your new pond. You could set it up so it gravity feeds to SC. 4. If you have koi AND possible predator problem; go deep and steep. (Knock on wood) no predator problem for me(70 degree sides and 3.5 feet deep). Well that's my bit, LP |

| Consider a pressurized filter. We have had ours for four years and we love it. The maintenance involves the turning of a backwash/rinse valve that takes about 15 minutes a month. I agree that a bottom drain(s) is great to eliminate the "gunk". The bottom of our pond does not accumulate anything. Perhaps you can use your existing pump along with the new pump. |

| We just built a new pond. When we did a "test run" to determine how the water spills over the biofalls and down the stream bed we discovered somehow the biofalls was not level anymore. The water only spills out from one side. Is there a way to fix this without having to dig it back out and reset it? We set it, put rocks inside to hold it in place while we back filled around it with dirt. We kept testing the level but now somehow it is no longer level. Can you please help? |
