Will my pond goldfish eat bugs and earthworms?

I noticed a variety of bugs and earthworms fall into my pond, which has five medium sized goldfish now. Will the fish eat them? Will they like them? Should I remove the bugs? I noticed some of the fish checking out a drowned earthworm; sort of nosing it. But they might not be hungry this time of year. Thoughts? Thanks! ~~Katy

My goldies ate earth worms that were longer then the fish. I don't know how they got the worms down. I had two goldfish trying to eat the same worm a few years ago. After a tug-o-war battle, one finally claimed the prize. I think most fish will try to eat anything they can fit into their mouth. I've often seen my fish splash the surface of the water as they take in a bug.

It's OK if they eat them, its a nice lil treat! I have a couple fish I brought in from the pond and have in an aquarium for the winter, I gave them some tiny lil earthworms yesterday as a treat..man do they love em. They'll have to wait till they go back outside for the bugs tho, lol.

My fish love earthworms. I also gave them the worms that I found in ears of corn, while putting corn in the freezer this year. I have been giving them grub worms I find in the flower beds and in the dirt when making new flower beds and had wondered if they might be harmful to the fish. They do have those pincers. Then I read that the grub worms can tear holes in the fishes intestines with those pincers if they are alive when they swallow them. So I won't be taking that chance any longer. I would be careful what kinds of bugs I gave them though. If they jump out of the water to catch one, and they do that sometimes; then I think that is ok. Glenda

Actually their diet was meant to be balanced with worms, bugs, etc. After all what we are feeding them from the bag/container is just dry old cereal soaked in pond water by the time they get to it, so I would expect that live protein in various forms must be a nice treat for them!

Katy....was really thrilled when I saw SW WA. I live in SW WA. and have a pond and feed my fish worms. In fact we started a worm farm so we have a ready supply. My DH also feed then periwinkles when they are in season in our creek. He shells then and then tosses them and you should watch the frenzy. Belle

I am so glad that I found this website. This is so wonderful. I am a new goldfish "mommy". My 2 yr old won a fish at a fair and I have no idea how to take care of it. I was told that they like earthworms but I didn't know how to feed them. So now "Fishstick" will be very happy with me when I get home. Thank you all.

Pezabelle, Periwinkles are flowers in our part of the world. But I think from my many, many travels in the Great Northwest I have heard Periwinkles here are a sort of muscle or mollusk type water creature. Right?? By the way I am in Sumner Wa today and will be in Port Hadlock, Indian Island tomorrow.

My little gold pond feeder fish has a long white worm? like thing sticking out of its mouth. I don't know what to do. He seems to be swimming OK but this worm like thing is about 1/3 of his body. Do they eat worms whole? Does anyone know. Help |

Yes, they do eat them whole and he could just be taking his time sucking it down. Earthworms turn white when they are underwater.
