| After wanting a pond for years I finally decided against an inground pond and just went ahead and bought a 4 or 5ft round black poly pond and set it in place above ground. Very ugly so I plastered the exterior sides with composted mulch from the city. This stuck on rather well, over a year now. Looking better, still the top edge is ugly. Here I cut some oak (any wood would do) into the requisite number of pieces to encircle the top and just glued them in place. Very goodlooking pond now. I added a solar pump/fountain from Harbor Freight @ $20 or so and done! This pump I turn on only when I sit by the pond and the sun is shining, but it never has clogged and is quite enjoyable. Ice last winter killed the few goldfish, I am told because toxic gases could not escape. This winter I will prevent this from happening.
One last good idea, springing out of laziness, a garden hose in the lawn will bury itself entirely in time, just disappear. With some care the lawnmower will not harm it. |

| What a horrible thing to say to someone! Everyone doesn't have the means to add pictures to their posts. I understood what fkeese said and I bet the little pond is beautiful. Like the old saying goes - if you can't say something nice don't say anything at all! |

| There is nothing wrong with a little above ground pond, as long as you like it. I went the next step, installed a black plastic 4x7 ft, 18 in deep, pond below ground. I also have no filtration at the pond, but clean out all leaves with a net and change 20% of the water with a bucket every month, never lost a goldfish over winter. As long as you clean the pond before winter and cover it, the goldfish probably will survive. I keep my goldfish now in an aquarium in the basement over winter. Have fun! Bernd |

| What do you think of the Harbor Freight fountain pump? I ran an extension cord to my pond pump but now I have a puppy who chews and will have to find a new way. I do need a pump in summer for the goldfish to get enough oxygen when it is 100 or so. |

| I have my pond in the shade so I do not need an air pump. The surface is large enough for 7 goldfish. But in case your pond is in the sun you would not need an air pump if the surface is mostly covered with plants providing shade in the water, and the depth is sufficient to prevent overheating the water. |
