The bougainvillea in the front yard is toast. Ditto to the Birds of Paradise in the backyard. It's COLD but at least it's been clear and brilliantly sunny. I saw a snippet of Oklahoma's icestorm on the evening news at work. Amazing. The roses seem largely unaffected. SDLM has blooms. Right now, it's 250 here. Is it cold where you are? MichaelAT |

I am in Oklahoma - 45 minutes from the city with no power. We do have power, but it is about 10 degrees with a wind chill of about zero. The roads are ice, and thick ice at that. As a matter of fact the yards are ice too. My husband cleared off the windshield of the vans, and cracked one of them. He was mad that he couldn't even get started that he hit it with the hard end of the scraper. The dogs think their poop are popcycles, so we have to walk on ice a few times a day to pick it up before they do. (I have never claimed to have smart dogs.) My school let out early last Friday - a disaster since ours is such a large school system. Yesterday was a holiday, and all the schools - even colleges are closed today. I am a little worried about my tea and china roses, but don't even dare to try to walk out to look at them yet. This is soooooo boring. I hope it heats up soon. Snow days this time of year just mean that school will be extended in the spring when it is pretty. I heard on the radio that it was 30 degrees in Brownsville, Texas. That could be very bad. How about the rest of you?

My husband's company is on OK and I'm glad he's not there right now. We've been on an upwards high again but now it's going back down. Up and down up and down. It's a miracle the plants know what to do. Carla

A rainy 45 degrees here this morning. Winter's not found its way here yet - no snow, no ice, no winter coats (they're still in storage). A false spring has sprung. December was unseasonably warm. It looks like January will be also. Iberis is blooming in the backyard, and some of the roses are leafing out. At the local library garden, patrons are now being greeted by daffodils in bloom, three months early. LIR

It's colder than a well-digger's backside here in Norman. But Thank GOD we never lost power. (knock on wood) It looks like a winter wonderland outside but it isn't snow, it's solid ice. Not sure if it's gonna melt off anytime soon as the temps are supposed to stay below freezing with more precip on the way this weekend. Usually it would've been 75 degrees the day after the ice storm ended...Oklahoma weather being what it is. At least maybe it killed off all the bugs this year!!

A friend in Missouri called last night, from a candlelit home. He watched his electricity survive two encrusting ice storms, only to loose his electricity with the third storm. He's predicted to get 3F tonight. We've had no problems at all, until the electricity went out for our entire substation last night. Back on this a.m. Local weather has us only in low 20's as the cold surge hits. Re the chinas and teas; they will enjoy the ice insulation, I think. That beats their being exposed to the temperature. The weatherunderground history for each area shows that our historically coldest temp is this part of January, so from here, it's going to be better.

Hi from Oregon. We aren't as cold as Oklahoma, but we did have two snow days last week from snow and freezing rain. And today, I think we are the only school district working. Lots of snow and freezing rain and my trip to work this morning (20 mi) was going about 20 MPH. I got here a half hour late, but at least I got here. My DH and DS are both out of school. This just blew in at about 7 am. I walked at 5:45 with Freddy and it was clear and cold, but not icy. Oh well. Stay safe out there everyone. Kathy

Oh, yeah, it's cold! This morning's low was -12 degrees, and with a light wind (thank goodness!) it felt like -20. YIKES! It has been unseasonably warm the rest of the winter, so this may have been brutal on the roses, not having had a chance to get used to it before the big deep freeze. Thankfully we had a few inches of snow over the weekend to insulate the ground a bit. Anxiously awaiting spring . . . .

A sunny fifteen and -20 and cold as a well digger's backside and snow and ice and candles and freezing in San Dimas and broken windshields. Whew!!! I just hope that everyone in the frozen spots makes it through "OK." It's still chilly here. I think the worst is over but we'll see how it goes. MichaelAT

Tonight may bring freezing rain, why can't it be snow. Brrrr. Carla

Compared to the rest of the nation's typical winters, I really have nothing to whine about... but I'm going to anyway, just a little bit! Yikes, 3 nights in a row so far of 32.2F, 31, and 32, then last night only 37. I sure hope this is over, it's so strange to find ice in the birdbath every morning. So now you know, sunny southern California might be sunny, but it can still be C-O-L-D! Sorry about your bougie and birds, Michael. Let them lie there, they may come back, especially if they are older plants. I know they're ugly to look at like this, but leaving them be until after Feb. 15th is best. So far, I've been lucky, nothing dead, just some limp banana leaves and scorched heliconia leaves. It's still a very long time until spring. ...sigh... Carla, freezing rain sounds vicious, stay warm.

I really really hate ice. Kids are ice skating on their lawns. I haven't walked the dogs in a week-- I haven't walked in a week. This weather is terrible. Now I am so sympathetic to those who don't have power. A friend of mine just returned from her home on the lake where there is no power, and she was miserable. The generators are noisy, and there is nothing to do. This cold snap will be one week on Friday, and we are expecting sleet and snow. I think tomorrow we will go to the health club just to take a small walk, to do something. I am sorry about the citrus in California, and those of you in south Texas are suffering so. I just cannot believe this weather. The roads have been so heavy with ice that they are breaking the ice with some type of a vehicle so that they can scrape the ice from the street. Salt and sand just melt and cause it to refreeze. We have power. That is good, and I need to be thankful for that. This is my report from Tulsa. Sammy

Just saw the picture of The Snow on The Beach in Venice California that was somthing! Now when if snows in Miami I'll really freak it has snowed there before 1977 I think. Ok so gas is down but orange juice will skyrocket
