For parents of invincible teenagers and young adults

My area is sick with grief over a double murder that happened last weekend. Two twenty somethings who disappeared between dinner and going to a friend's house to watch a movie.
On Sunday, they were reported missing.
On Monday, his burned body was found by railroad tracks.
Midweek, her body was found, in a house several blocks away, she had (according to reports) been raped and tortured for two days before her murder.

I have read comments here of children who think that they can handle any situation.
Have your mature children Google News "Double Murder Knoxville" and tell you how they would avoid that situation. This is not the kind of place where random murders are a common occurrence. But if their absence had been given Amber Alert status, maybe ......

Here's THE reason to know where your loved ones are.

Yes, this is a desparate try to find something a little bit positive about a horrific situation.

Ann, I cannot bear to read about it, but I wonder about our world today.

Are the authorities, families, friends, schools aware of predators, and fear speaking up? Do they do a token intervention, and shrug it off? Are they too busy? Can predators move too easily?

Do you think there are more predators today than there were 50 or 100 years ago? Or perhaps it is gangs or drugs?

Years ago when I first read about "big brother" watching us, I feared cameras on the streets and in the stores. Now I welcome them - especially in the schools.

Does the paper mention who did this or why?

Four are under arrest, two in Knoxville, two out in western KY. A fingerprint on a cartridge ties one to the house. Others were renting the house. At a minimum several are felons who have prior arrests and convictions. Initital arrests this time were for felons with guns and or ammo, which are federal crimes.

That's "who" is under arrest.

"Why". It started with a carjacking, but the car was found a couple of blocks from his body.

What a horrible story and I feel so bad for the surviving family and friends.
I apologize Ann for straying for a minute. A young man was shot in a pizza store here about a month ago. I heard later from "kids" that it may have been part of a gang thing, like the murderer joining the gang. Luckily, the young man lived.
