I went to Lake Tahoe today

Sunday morning: The other two won't get up and I can't say I blame them--so I head out for Sacramento to go wandering about in the Historic Rose Garden again.

That lasted about thirty minutes--suffering from rose overload--if I see another one my head's gonna fall off--

So, completely at wit's end, and with far too much time on my hands, I impulsively decided to drive up to Tahoe.

Dear God--is there any place more beautiful than the drive on 80 from Placerville up into the Sierras--everything covered in snow--real snow--not make believe snow--

I stopped at a few exits and just parked. One that I don't recall the name of--leads to a dead end--weird. I was grateful though--I got out of the car and waded knee deep through this powdery miracle substance known as snow

When I arrived at Lake Tahoe it was snowing hard (I guess, it's not like I have a reference point)and I got out again and went walking along the edge of the lake--so quiet.

There was an accident on the way back so traffic was backed up like Houston in the middle of the Sierras in the middle of nowhere. I was grateful I turned the heater on high and rolled the windows down. There just aren't any words for the vistas--very ???

At Emigrant Pass, on the way down--I do believe I experienced the most beautiful set of scenes, all rolled into one, that I've ever seen

Mountains and forests covered in snow, snowing, the valleys to the left with fog/clouds/mist hovering in the forests there--straight ahead a blue-purple storm cloud that reminded me of nothing if not a summer thunderstorm in the South--to the right a clearing in the sky with light--truly golden light--shining down on just the tippy top of a forested mountain ridge--and in my rearview mirror, a rainbow.

Snow, rainbow, fog, snow thunderstorm, golden sunshine--all at once.

Almost ran off the interstate.

Does something for your soul doesn't it?

I hope I can take that drive someday - it sounds like something I want to put in my memory banks.

My favorite route to Tahoe is from Placerville over Echo Summit on Hwy 50. Would use I-80 occasionally from Auburn, past Emigrant and over Donner to Truckee. Hwy 50 is much better... on 4 wheels or 2.

Would you believe it - I've lived here for 8 years now and DH STILL has not taken me to Tahoe? We've talked about going each winter/summer but it's not happened. There's still time though. Sounds like it was really gorgeous up there yesterday.

I tried not to.... don't ever take the Beartooth Highway from Red Lodge, Montana to Cooke City at the northeast entrance to Yellowstone Park. If 80 to Tahoe dazzled you... the Beartooth will give you a heart attack.

Jody, the solitude was nice. I confess to getting misty eyed when: (1) I'm by myself and see something pretty (2) I haven't eaten--LOL.

DnD, One of the dealers up here keeps advertising a Ducati. I know it's not a Harley--but it's so hard to not stop by the dealer.

aprille, you gotta go--if you go for the casinos then South LT is happening--trendy and upscale--Hwy50 If you're going for a "country" experience then 80 to Truckee and the North Lake Tahoe exit (I still haven't been to Yosemite and it was #1 on my list--oh well)

Here are a couple Carla. One is Donner Lake right before Truckee. The other is in Tahoe City. They're the best I could do under the circumstances.

I've seen snow and I've seen it snow a few times before but never "raining down" like it was.

I can just about imagine northerners reading this and rolling their eyes. :)

It truly is a beautiful place. My wife is from the area so we end up spending some time around the lake every time we go home to Reno. And I always hated that the good folks in Nevada just don't seem to care about the beauty - they allowed those awful casinos to sprout up. The CA side banned building, which is why it's so nice. There are some places in the world that should remain untouched by man and I think that is one of them. One of the worlds' glorious spots.

LOL, Ducati makes some good bikes. Even when I owned Harleys and rode with outlaws I usually rode Triumph. Every time I got a Harley built to ride... some rich kid would offer me so much money for it I had to sell and start building again. When I moved to Montana... I sold the Harleys and the Triumph I had. Only kept one bike, the one that fit me and was the most fun to ride. It is a 1981 Honda CB900. I ride to suit myself not fit someone else's image :) All my riding partners ride Harleys and they tease me a little. They always want to swap bikes for rides too. Oh, Deb likes the Honda best too. It is so quiet, comfortable and smooth. That helped make the choice easy. The fact it is a rocket doesn't hurt either.
Living in Sacramento for 30 years gave me time to find some good rides out of that area.... you ride up 50 to Lake Tahoe. Take 89 over Monitor and down to 395. Head south to Lee Vining (Mono Lake). Go up over Tioga to Yosemite. Take 49 north to Placerville and back to Sacramento on 50. That was Deb's first ride with me. I warned her I liked long rides :)

What beautiful imagery and just what I needed; thank you! I love seeing snow fall heavily - I suppose also because we don't get that much here. But there is something magical about it.

I'd love to take a drive up to our mountains, at least, but it's just not the same when you need a driver, lol. Maybe a hike in the woods behind me... they are right behind me after all!
