 o
why did my roses die

I bought 2 huge Don Juan roses last August from Home Depot. They continued to bloom profusely through mid-October, putting on lots of new growth until frost. They were properly planted and cared for and I really looked forward to watching them dazzle me this Spring and Summer. When I went out to check on them last week it appeared that all the canes were brown and brittle. It looks as if at some point in late Winter they began to leaf out as I can see the new growth that must have died when the temperatures fell again. It seems that the canes then died along with the new growth but why?

Your roses might not be dead; there could be live cane below the soil line, or at the soil line. I would prune off the dead wood, and see what happens this spring.

I'm not familiar with Don Juan, but it might be prone to dieback in a cold zone.
