dead heading and trimming

some of the blooms have died off, here are some pics what i did.
one of them started having die back and here is where i cut just below the die back. is this too close to the leaflet? also my shears didn't work too good. they had a tough time cutting and crushed the soft wood.

so after blooms are spent how should i dead head them?

oh yeah and you can see the damage where someone tore off a stem too. i asked them not to do that again.
