I think the most disturbing thing about spam is that one can track surges in it after sharing one's email address with a "friend" who's admittedly not computer savvy.

How do you explain conclusively to someone that in all likelihood their computer is one of the "bots" that's been taken over and is spewing this stuff out to the world.

I admit, I don't even try to make the case anymore. I just focus on making sure mine is as secure as possible.

Ohhh, and places that use firstname.lastname@ blah.com are notorious for getting it. Oxford's is like that, and I learned that I'm really descended from royalty and well soon be very wealthy, lol.

Seriously, I forgot the best spam I've ever gotten, and it was beautifully ironic. Last year, I think, missing Mom incredibly during Christmas, I saw in my inbox a mail from simply the name Eleanor [her name] titled "Thinking of you". I cried :)
