Monday will be my last day at work (although I'll still be on payroll for a few weeks). 24+ years. It is starting to feel strange, not having a real place to go. This hasn't happened since I was discharged from the service, it was between semesters and I just hung around my parent's house for a few months. I have promised that I will go and work out and make sure that I get dressed every day (almost). But, I am fortunate to be "retired", in quotes because while I will be considered retired from my company, I'll have to go back to work someplace. And I don't know if I'll take an engineering or some kind of project management job. I won't manage people again, that's for sure. I'll miss seeing my friends every day. I'm happy that I'm able to say "retired", but it is still weird.

Congratulations------You will be surprised at how you will slowly fill up your days---I've been retired since 1985 and now I wonder how I ever found the time to work. Best of luck in your new venture and please keep us posted. Florence

Diane, aren't you too young to retire? I always thought you were younger than me. Good luck on the job hunt. You can probably pick something that makes you happy, maybe a garden center?

Congratulations Diane - it is a happy but strange feeling. I retired from my job after 22 years. It is wonderful when you are feeling young enough, and I know that is how you sound, to live a full life. We joined the Probus club, which is world-wide and what a great group they are - monthly meetings with great speakers, but all the other fun social stuff they do - great trips and pub nights and all sorts of differnt activities within the group whether it is golfing, singing crafts and much more to suit everyones taste. - the only thing they do not have within the group is a garden group....ummmm - would be nice to fix that! While I think you will always miss your work mates, it is good for the soul to keep something going with them, I worked at a busy medical laboratory "patients only" - samples were sent out, but worked with my two buddies almost from the beginning, they were my soul mates - both younger than I, but we get together once a month for a meal and gossip. I really look forward to that. I too, did not go into full retirement right away, we had started our bed and break fast two years before when my husband took an early retirement which was to be something to subsidise our retirement - so my last two years at work were horendously busy trying to do both. So it was nice to devote full time to the B&B. Finally we retired that too and though we miss all the great guests we had from all over the world, we are completely free and it is a great feeling. ..........and have there been times when I did not get dressed in the morning?.......truthly yes, and it really does not matter, but boy, as Florence said, your life becomes sooo busy, you will wonder how you ever found the time to go out to work. Just enjoy, you do not even have to plan on being busy - it will happen. Besides, one can spend the whole time caring for roses alone, tell me about it, tee-hee! Pauline - VI

Diane, congratulations! My FIL is retired from Duke Power and makes lots of money doing other jobs. I hope you will be happy and content. Carla

Thanks everyone! Sue, I'm a year away from the next MAJOR birthday! There was a large group of us who originally worked on the same project who ate lunch together every day. Now the balance has shifted, there are more that are out of the company than in. We try to schedule a lunch every month to catch up, and there are other smaller groups who get together for dinner. There are other friends who I see socially. I haven't geared up to looking for a new job yet, it can wait until after the holidays!

Diane, ENVY! ENVY! ENVY! I hope you really don't have to keep working full time. That's no fun. Go for something part time at night, so not to disturb your gardening routine. (note absence of suggestions) I am in the red zone. Less than 5 years to go. I'm gonna retire completely. Wake up, don't even bother to take off my pajamas, hang around the house watching TV, drinking beer, drooling, and burping. With all that, I WILL wonder how I ever found time to work. I'm sure for you the next major birthday is 40. Yeah, too young to retire. Just don't retire from here. We need you. Harry

I'm with Harry on the envy thing. Six more years unless I win the lottery or something. Not likely to happen since I don't play. Easing into it with a part time job sounds good if you aren't really ready to be fully retired. Not that I can imagine not being ready. I am SO ready to retire. Congratulations. Enjoy your freedom.

You are so lucky! Ok, not lucky, hard working. But still! I will have to work until I'm 70 and I'm not kidding. That's the only way I will have enough money to be able to live in retirement. I am 55 now and 1 year away from sending my boy to college and I have only been employed where I am earning retirement for 8 years. You can do the math. Oh well, its good that I like my job. Congratulations Diane! Kathy

Congratulations! Dad is 66 and a workaholic; he will always have something up, I'm sure. Still hardly time for vacation and that seems silly. He's ex military too, lol. I'm lucky I was always a little lazy ;] My back makes career a joke possibly and my upright hours are necessarily limited. Seriously I think my dad and grandmother would go bonkers!
|
Well Diane, you look great.
|
I know how you feel, Diane, and am right there with you. I am just a little under retirement age, but my entire life has been my work. I am presently looking around for activities and new friends. It is a big step, and I need to be prepared. In my situation the longer I wait to take retirement, the more I will make. Sammy
|
Thank you Sue! ;-)) Harry, close. Um, yeah, Close... Thanks again everyone. Just had dinner with a bunch of friends, all 7 used to work at the same place but now only one will be left. Not going anywhere, just bought a new laptop, and I'll be spending the new few weeks trying to make sense of my house. And catching up on stuff on my DVR. And keeping warm!!!

Diane, sorry to come in late to the retirement party....if I were you, I'd sure treasure every day. I think you're entitled to a big chunk of lazy time, like the winter maybe? Just keep that in mind, you're ENTITLED to just go at your own speed for awhile. You'll probably see more of your friends now than you did before. You'll find your groove soon enough! I'd trade places with you, that's for sure!
