| I have quite a few potted bands from last year. They are growing well and putting out new growth [due to unseasonably warm weather]. I usually prune on Valentines Day. My question is - how much, if any, do I prune these young bands? Some are a bit lanky but with only a couple of canes. Thanks for any advice!

| I don't prune mine at all except for some wood that died maybe or the spent ends where clusters of flowers were. They look weak and floppy but no matter. Pot them up or plant them and the newer canes will rise up and make a sturdy bush. Later you can remove the little floppy stuff the rose grew in the beginning to get the roots going. The bush is going to look completely different in 2 or 3 years when the mature roots start pushing up nice fat canes. |

| Glad I asked this question - I was wondering if, by pruning, that would make the plants put out and become bushier - now will just let them be. These have been potted since last fall. In early spring, I give my other roses epsom salts, Mills Magic Rose Mix. Should I do that with these bands? Should I expect them to start making basals this spring? How long does it take a band to actually make good strong roots? And what about, after weather warms, watering them with fish emulsion or other kinds of fertilizer? Thanks... Judith |
