making choices.

Considering which were my favourite shapes in Andrea's earlier thread led me to think through the process of selection, realising how mine has changed over time. For many, many years, I simply chose plants (not just roses) on the look of each particular one. After some years, I grew a little more circumspect about whether this would actually be a good plant in my climate and situation......until finally, I have convinced myself that I am now a mature and reasoning gardener who always, always selects with the whole picture in mind. Gardening on allotments amongst veggies, and in shady woodlands, tends to militate against certain plants because they will neither look right nor will they thrive. I am now, I thought, officially immune to the lure of a single beautiful bloom, either in a catalogue or in real life.

Or so I thought, until I found my finger hovering over the 'buy' button whilst idly perusing a dahlia catalogue site. Dahlias! Don't need any more, have little room......but oh, last October, they were a joyous sight while all around was falling into decay, the dahlia bed was a haven of tropical South America.....and some of those dainty collarettes!!!

I always grew the large ones that needed tying up but they sure got noticed. If I grew sunflowers, it would have been easier. Who doesn't love dahlias?

I don't, because "my" groundhogs love them. In between deer and the groundhogs, there are only a few things you can grow here in the burbs. So I tell myself that anything they would devour within 2 days of planting are just plainly ugly, except for roses, for now...
