Does anyone know of a decent moisture meter that isn't expensive? I've seen them for hundreds, but don't want to spend that much. Thanks, andrea

I have one I picked up at the local lawn and garden several years ago. I have pics if I can remember how to put them on here. Pembroke

I have one that's free -- just take a piece of something strong and not pointed on the end -- rebar or another metal rod of lesser diameter, and push it into the ground. You won't be able to push it past the point where the water gets to. And then you'll know -- water gets down to six inches, or two inches or whatever.

Kathy, My soil is fairly firm. I wonder if that will still work....Guess I'll find out. My new meter will be delivered tomorrow. Thanks for the tip, andrea

I have one similar to Pembrooke's and it was very cheap at my local nursery. I'm not sure how accurate it is but it at least gives me some idea.

Thanks Seil, I hope it works just half way well. The way we're going her in California, we'll have water rationing coming up. And I want to be sure that the babies get enough to drink....One way or the other they will. I really don't need to run the washer or take baths. They won't notice if I'm not as 'fragrant' as they are... Thanks again, andrea
