I'm fine. Prostrate cancer is in remission and my bladder and bowels are almost back to normal after all the radiation. Am making plans to get back into my garden this spring.
Have been busy with the ARS Ask Questions.
I stopped posting because the Forum was getting too personal and away from its purpose.
Besides, there are lots of "experts" giving advice, both knowledgable and not. No sense me adding to an already answered post just to see myself in print.

Hoov, thanks for your concern!

RE: Is Karl Okay?

Karl, I am one of the still newbies to roses, going into year 3. While everyones responses are of value (even some not so knowledgable), responses from rosarians of your quality are extremely valued.

I became very annoyed with this forum last year. But then realized that the only one I should have been annoyed with was me, as I have full control over the threads I choose to read or participate in.

I have much to learn, this is a good place to do that. And quality rosarians are few and far between.

Karl, you are an awesome Hoosier. Stay well.

RE: Is Karl Okay?

It is good to see your name in lights again. I have always enjoyed your post.
The last week of radiation leaves something to be desired although 11 years of being cancer free is a good thing. May you have a speedy recovery.

Had the radioactive seeds put in too. Their effects are almost gone now. I can sleep most of the night without getting up and can go places without having to stop all the time.

 o
RE: Is Karl Okay?

I had the radioactive seeds also. I hope the treatment works for you as well as it did in my case.

Best regards- D

I'm glad everything is going well! The "ARS Ask Questions" gain is our loss.

I hope you find the time to visit us when you can. I miss hearing your advice and experience. I still remember some pictures you posted a few years back of all the efforts you make to winter protect your roses. With determination like that you can beat just about anything I'm betting....Maryl

RE: Is Karl Okay?

I understand how you feel Karl, but it's a loss for the rest of us not to hear from you.

RE: Is Karl Okay?

Karl, I'm very happy to hear that you are getting back to normal. Regarding your statement, those of us who have been around a while (at least me) tend to put more weight on responses from folks that we know really know their stuff. You are very high on that list. So I agree there can be some annoying things on this forum, but Harmonyp made a good point. I find that I do the same thing, just ignore the best that I can. We need you on here if you have time and the inclination. You are certainly one of the kings of the rose forum.

It is good to hear from you, and I am pleased that Hoove asked. As a former Hoosier, I look forward to your responses, and have fond memories of my father's rose garden when we lived in Indiana.

Take care, and stick around.

Karl, so glad your treatment appears to be having the desired results. My brother-in-law is also in remission after his battle. What a wonderful thing! And how great that you'll be back in your garden this spring. Hopefully, you'll want to share your garden with us then. All the best to you!!

Karl, I am another reader who always looks forward to your postings, and considers you a font of trustable knowledge. Especially as I deal with spinal arthritis, I try to think, "Now how would Karl make this work?" I hope you will keep on posting here when you can. And wonderful that the treatments are giving you more time to enjoy life! We need more physical strugglers on this list to keep us all going! And to help shape up the younger whippersnappers!

Karl, I miss you too - and thank you for all those good tips you gave. I appreciate your knowledge and experience very much.

Karl,
I am glad to hear you are feeling better. Its OK to avoid this Forum. But, you have to be out in the garden when the weather warms up. You have always found a way.

RE: Is Karl Okay?

Have ordered some new Griffith Buck roses which I'll pick up when I go to Florida at the end of February. I'm going to enlarge my Buck collection.
In May I got a new 2012 Ford Focus Titanium hatchback with all the bells and whistles. It gets 40mpg on the highway so I can afford to buy the gas for the trip.
Am thinking of taking a trip to Chamblees this spring.

Have made arrangements with a local Arboretum To donate my rose collection to them when I get to where I can't care for them anymore or when I die. They've obtained a grant to make a memorial garden in my name. They've agreed to spread my ashes there so I'll always be with my roses.
I'm working with them to design it. It'll have raised beds and be handicapped assessable.
Last summer during my cancer treatments, my rose beds got so weed infested the arboretum staff came and cleaned them, pulled all the weeds and spread mulch.

Oh, Karl, that's wonderful! Not only will you be with the roses but you'll still be sharing them with so many others! You are a gem! And I hope to heaven that it doesn't happen anytime soon, lol!

Have a great trip!

RE: Is Karl Okay?

Hi Karl, that's a wonderful legacy you impart to the planet earth with your roses. I went to Cantigny rose park nearby last spring NOT to look at roses, but to check on peonies. However, peonies were past their prime in early June, and Austin roses were blooming. I fell in love with them at the rose park, and that's how I resumed my love affair with roses.

Many people will visit your local Arboretum, will fall in love with roses - and your legacy will pass on. Thanks for all the good tips and info. you gave me - much appreciated.

So you are way way better than "okay"! :)

RE: Is Karl Okay?

Pretty much except my bladdder still has a way to go.
Am thinking about drinking a new wine for seniors called "PINO MORE."
You drink it just before you go to bed. It acts as an anti-diuretic.
It is expected to reduce the number of trips
older people have to make to the
bathroom during the night.

RE: Is Karl Okay?

Karl, I am delighted to hear you are recovering and looking forward to spring with the roses. Your posts are ones I pay close attention to and I hope you will continue to spread the wealth of your advice and experience. I have a good friend who beat prostate cancer and he is into many holistic disiplines - the website of Walter Last is one of his favorites. He is a gardner and is back doing everything he did before - is a native plant/tree aficionado but I am continually nudging him to roses. Take good care and wishing you a bountiful year with your roses.
Judith
