Moving a small KO rose

Last June I planted to KO rose bushes that were quite tiny. Unfortunately, I planted them about 4 feet apart. The doubled in size -- still fairly small by the end of summer.

I would really like to add a third. Would it be ok to move one of them over about 1 foot? Is May a good time to do this? We usually don't plant here until Memorial Day so I figure it will still be dormant then.

If I move it, will it stunt its growth for a while??

Any other tips for moving it?

Here is a pic from last June.

Yes, you can move it but I wouldn't wait until Memorial Day to do it. It should be blooming by then in SE MI. I would move it as soon as the soil is workable, late March or early April, and before it really starts to wake up. If you move it while it's still dormant it won't even know it's been moved when it wakes up. I'm in St Clair Shores and my roses usually start to come out of dormancy around the first week of April. Of course, that's all dependent on the weather we get. A good rule of thumb for our area is when the forsythias start to bloom for spring pruning and I'd move it just before that. The roses will be in the stores by then and you should be able to pick up another KO to plant too!

Make sure you get all the roots out with it. Your better off digging it out and leaving the ball of dirt intact and just move it over!. You don't want to disturb the small feeder roots!

Thanks -- that's helpful. Hope I can dig a hole in March! Might have to be early April...
