Um, although I don't have Baltimore Belle, I do have Tolstoi, another hybrid setigera which has similar growth....and both these roses do have distinctively different growth habits for me so I would guess it depends on the job you want it to do. DE is growing with a lot of basal growth, very much like a multiflora rambler, while Tolstoi has a more familiar climbing style in that it has fewer but longer, more flexible canes - not so great for a freestanding shrub (which Darlow's is shaping up to be) but great on a fence or some other structure. I couldn't say how your climate would affect them but I would expect it to be different to the UK.

Darlow's Enigma is *not* a rambler, climber or anything remotely like one. It is a free standing shrub. A large free standing shrub.

Baltimore Belle is a reasonably lax rambler. Not in the same league as something like Alexandre Girault, which I could practically tie knots in the canes, but perfectly reasonable to grow on a fence.

Baltimore Belle grows later than most Ramblers and in my garden, preferred a little shade as the full sun bleaches out and also burns the thin petals. This rose has very flexible canes and although I kept mine as a 8 foot shrub, it still needed a lot of support. Darlows Enigma is another rose that doesn't like the full sun and the flowers stay longer plus look better in some afternoon shade.

Well, it sounds like DE since I'd rather have something shrubby than something rambly. Thanks everybody. Now the question is whether it's worth trying to put it in this year with everybody saying we're never going have to rain again.
