rose roots

I live in South Florida and have to worry about nematodes.... I was told unless one has good soil, roses down here need to be planted on Florentina root stock. Instead of paying 50 or 60 dollars for one rose, I would much rather amend my soil and have good dirt and lots of roses.

Last fall, I dug down 4 feet and made a 10X10 ft bed of roses using composted soil. I was getting ready to do this again. But the gardener said, the rose roots only go down about 20inches. Am I digging down too far. Do roses out down long tap roots.

I am planting mostly hybrid teas, and Floribunda roses, though I have a few of Buck shrubs.

Everything I read says that roses have deep roots, but I guess that is kind of relative.... what exactly is deep?

Any help would be appreciated

Thanks
