planting roses in azalea bed

I PLANTED MY ENCORE AZALEAS BEFORE TRYING
MY LUCK WITH ROSES. THESE AZALEAS ARE SUN FRIENDLY, SO I USED ONE OF THE ONLY VERY SUNNY SPOTS AVAILABLE IN MY YARD. I NOW REALIZE THAT THEY NEED ONLY 3+ HOURS OF SUN EACH DAY, AND I HAVE ANOTHER LOCATION THAT WOULD SUIT THEM.

IF I MOVED THEM, INSTEAD OF ADDING TO MY 'POT KINGDOM', I COULD PLANT THE ADDITIONAL 9 ROSES THAT I NOW HAVE THAT NEED PERMANENT HOMES. AZALEA ROOTS ARE VERY SHALLOW. WILL IT BE ALRIGHT TO MOVE MY ENCORES, REMOVE SOME OF THE ACID TYPE SOIL, AMEND THE SOIL TO PLEASE THE ROSES AND THEN PLANT THEM THERE?

I have roses and Encore azaleas growing side by side and both seem happy -- I don't think you need to change the soil, just add more compost if you think its depleted.

I agree with Cecily. Roses will actually grow in a fairly wide range of soils as long as the soils aren't really, really extreme. If the soil for the azaleas isn't spread throughout the bed but is just in the actual planting spots, you might try mixing the less acidic soil between the plants with the more acidic soil actually in the planting spots. Or, plan to plant the roses in the less acidic in-between areas. But I'm not sure it will make that much difference--but maybe it will help out a bit.

Good luck with your planting. We look forward to pics when you new rose bed blooms. : )

Thanks Kate. But I will be using the entire (almost former) azalea bed for the roses. The azaleas will go to a different side of my yard.

The reason I asked about the bed, is that initially, the top six to eight inches of the soil was removed and replaced with acid soil for azaleas. For the next several years the whole bed was fertilized with more acidic fertilizer.

I was hoping to remove the top 12 inches or so (azalea roots are very close to the surface) and replace it with soil from the area where I will be putting the azaleas (virgin territory) and then amend the whole 'stripped' bed with EB Stone Rose soil and added compost.

What do you think? Will that work?

Thanks again,

andrea

Sounds like a lot of unnecessary work. But if it makes you happy, it won't hurt.

Most of the South a) grows azaleas without any special soil prep, and b) grow roses without any special soil prep.
