Not sure if I should do this.

| We have New Dawn Roses on our 10 by 10 foot Pergola. It has not produced roses in 3 years. I am thinking of pruning it down to about a foot, in the spring. It's going to be a big job because it goes right over the Pergola on both sides. Any suggestions for what I should do? I was thinking of leaving what is on top of the Pergola and just letting the new growth of the climbing roses trail up there. Thank you...
Also, we planted two male Kiwi's on both sides to climb up the Pergola. I want to get two more, one for each side. They have beautiful pink leaves when they mature. Thanks... |

| Why exactly do you want to cut the rose down to the ground? Would you rather just get rid of it completely? What is your goal? |

| New Dawn originated as a sport or mutation of a climber (Dr. Van Fleet) that looks the same, but only blooms in May-June. These once-blooming roses will not bloom if they are pruned severely in fall or spring. It's not uncommon for ND to revert to Dr. VF, and producers can accidentally use material from a reverted cane to make new rose plants. So a possible explanation of it not blooming for three years is that you have a Dr. VF and have been pruning it too much. Canes that carry through the winter should bloom in May-June, however. Once-blooming roses only bloom off canes that have over-wintered. |

| I gave New Dawn a chance, but it was a once bloomer for me. There were a few blooms after the spring bloom, but not enough for an arbor by my house. I would get rid of it and find a rose that you know will bloom. There is a big difference between zones 6 and 7 so I hesitate to suggest a rose. It is hard to start over with a climber since you will need to invest about 3 years with it. Sammy |

| I'm in z6 and have never had problems with rebloom on New Dawn. The best blooms happen when I get younger canes going laterally rather than up--I've trained them to encourage this.. You can orient the tips completely down to encourage this (pegging). Then they put out a lot of side branches which all bloom. I'm pretty lazy on the pruning, just take off the inconveniently located/old wood and some side growth each year as I have a chance. Regardless of whether it is ND or has reverted to Dr. VF, cutting to a foot won't help--you may as well remove it if you're going to do that. If you do have a lot of growth that should side branch and bloom and it isn't, maybe removal is your best option. My largest climber (and a non-stop bloomer in this zone) is the Austin rose Teasing Georgia--a pretty apricot with a lovely scent! Gets as large as New Dawn, almost, which is saying something... |

| Quality of the soil, amount of sun and rain, dead and damaged canes, can impact blooming. It might be possible to revive it, one would need to evaluate a number of things... if you have any pics of it that would help to diagnose what might be happening with it... |

| I have decided, not to cut it down and see what happens this summer. Thank you everyone. I will try to post a picture of ND when it was blooming. |
