Tell me about Papi Delbard

Posted by jumbojimmy (My Page) on

I bought two roses today: Papi Delbard and Claude Monet.
I'm not sure if I had made the right decision to select Papi Delbard as a climbing plant

Can someone please confirm whether Papi Delbard has fragrance? Is it strong?

It has a strong but peculiar fragrance like tropical fruit. The colors are interesting.

The habit in my garden was more climbing than shrubby. but it didn't make real long canes. It was resistant to blackspot, but YMMV depending on the strains of disease present.. Repeat bloom was rather sparse. I liked this rose well enough, but it got rosette disease last summer.

Thank you for your comment. I really hope it has a strong scent. So far I'm not really liking the photos that I see on HMFR...I bought it on mpulse without researching carefully. Hoping that in real life, PD looks much more better. I'm planning to replace my Claire Austin with this Climber..

RE: Tell me about Papi Delbard

I drooled over Papi Delbard for years when Ashdown listed it and it kept slipping through my fingers in orders. I've had mine about 4 years now, and it's a fairly stiff-caned climber that's very hardy (not Jimmy's concern in Australia, though) and it has quite lovely flowers. It does have the Austin big-bloomed look, assuming you like that, but I don't detect nearly the scent that would be expected of most Austins. I think many of the Delbard roses have done like Kordes and sacrificed some scent for hardiness, disease resistance, and study blooms. Papi Delbard has all of the latter characteristics, though as Michael says it's not yet a frequent rebloomer. Still, I love it.
