| I'm not in your climate but Blaze only gives me one big bloom in the spring and nothing later. I don't have Red Eden but I did have Dublin Bay and it bloomed several times through the season. |

If I wanted a red rose covered gazebo in Zone 10, I would absolutely go with Don Juan on Fortuniana rootstock ONLY. NOT on Dr. Huey (which is the only way you will find it in any local garden center or store). Don Juan on Fortuniana is only available by mail order, and you can get it at K & M Roses or Cool Roses, and then you need to feed the dickens out of it. A vigorous rootstock and lots of food (and sun) are the best way to get it to bloom vigorously. |

| thanks for the suggestions. |

| I grow both in zone 5. Blaze repeats reasonably well, almost continuous, but Red Eden flowers only twice during the season. Blaze's color is bright and Red Eden's form is irresistible. I think both of them worth growing. I would suggest that you plant them both side by side and see which one you like. You will love both for different reasons. |

| Dash, you must have Blaze Improved or Superior or what ever they call it, not the earlier Blaze. BI repeats much better than the regular Blaze. |

| seil, Yes, come to think of it, it may be Blaze Improved. I did not know there are much difference between them. The flowers also stay for a long time without fading. The cane is semi-hardy for zone 5. Only complaint I have is Black Spot prone. |

Okay, dash and seil. I have been working on red climber projects for a few years now in Michigan's upper peninsula. I have a rose that was labeled Blaze when I bought it and I became suspicious of whether it was Blaze or Blaze Improved. So I bought a plant labeled Blaze Improved from High Country Roses last spring. Is there a way to tell the difference between Blaze and Blaze Improved? Is the only difference the repeat blooming? I think both roses are still getting their roots under them but the first "Blaze" gave me a couple of flushes of blooms last year. I have tried to pair it with a Climbing Iceberg but up here, the Blaze outgrows the Iceberg. Climbing Iceberg always adds some suspense to the garden when I wonder whether it will survive the winter (with a rose cone filled with oak leaves and a mound of dirt). I am unaware of another white climber that would match up with a red Blaze. By the way, I have tried Dublin Bay twice here and it never survived the winter. Has anyone else been able to grow it this far north? |
