Strange problem: Roses covered in road salt

I have 4 very large HTs in very large pots on my front porch, its enclosed. They survived a cross country trip strapped to a trailer completely exposed to the elements. While driving we hit a snow storm in Ohio and they ended up getting sprayed with road salt. I mean REALLY coated with it, as soon as we arrived home with my precious cargo I busted out the hose, tipped the pots on their sides and gave each one a through rinse. I just checked them a couple days ago and they are beginning to leaf out! I'm soooooo happy they survived :). I plan to remove the top layer of soil from each pot as I'm sure it contains a fair bit of salt and they are going to want a drink soon. Is there anything else that anyone can think of the I could do to limit they damage that might have been done from their little trip?

Padawan, you did the right thing, they just need to be hosed off from all the salt, the whole thing, plants, soil and pot-you need to really give them a good drenching. If the soil is loose on the top you could remove that but a good "soaking rain" from your hose should be just fine.

If they are in clay pots you might need to scrub and rinse the outsides of the pots as they wick away salt through the pores of the clay; that is some of the crusty white "age" you see on old flowerpots.

Gypsum is known to de-salt soil. Walmart has it cheapest for $5 for a big bag. It's expensive elsewhere.
