| San Fran. far east bay area. Still going into low 30's at night, and possibility of one or two more nights of 20's before spring. I have never formally fertilized before. Each year I've done 2 - 3 thick mulchings with composted to medium fresh horse manure. But this year I've decided I want to add a little more umph, and bought a bag of Vigoro rose fertilizer (was looking for Rose-Tone, but didn't find it at the big box store I was at. Did find at another store yesterday, and plan on that being my next application).
I realize I've read plenty in this forum on how often to fertilize, and to stop in fall to allow roses to harden for winter, but don't have a clue when to apply first application? |

| I am to the east of you in Oakdale. We were getting a few nights in the 20's and more in the 30's over the last 2 months. Lately night temperatures are in the low to middle 40's. Many of my roses have new shoot buds breaking and spring growth has begun. This is the time that I usually begin fertilizing my roses. |

| I'd think you'd want to wait until you are confident you won't have damaging freezes. A short dip to a low temp usually won't hurt much. We aren't having anything quite that low and I've continued using half and half of organics and Gro Power Plus on my clients' roses. It's worked quite well with no potential for burning anything. The combination has seemed to feed both soil and plants well as they grow nicely and never stop flowering. Unfortunately, I can't use horse manure in their gardens due to dogs and small kids everywhere. It's their preferences. Kim |

| Horse manure is good for kids and dogs! Dogs love the taste (and it's certainly not bad for them), kids don't. Thanks much for your replies. My gut was telling me to wait a few more weeks. I think I'm going to do that :). |

| You're welcome. I agree about the manure, but the "moms" hate the ideas of puppies eating it then licking them, and the kids playing in it. Go figure. Kim |
