Can I plant now?

Ok, I did it!! Some some nice rose plants and bought them. I haven't planted them yet and it's supposed to get down to 15 tomorrow. Warmer in 3 days.

Should I put them in the ground now; or leave them in the garage for a couple days?

Never grown roses before.

Bare-roots or potted? Leafed-out roses will lose new growth at around 27 degrees and shouldn't be planted out until April in zone 6. I would hope nobody is selling them in early February. Bare-roots should be soaked first and may be planted in winter with a mound of soil over the cane stubs.

Yep, I have planted bare roots throughout winter - I try not to do it with snow on the ground as it falls into the planting hole and chills the soil (which is generally much warmer than the surface). Obviously, if the soil is too frozen to get a spade in, hang on till a thaw.

I'd wait. It's still too cold to plant in your zone. Unless you can dig easily and the soil is friable, that means when you take a handful of it and squeeze it, it doesn't clump up but stays loose, than it's too cold and/or wet to plant. A few weeks in the garage will not hurt them no matter if they're bare rooted plants or potted growing ones. Just keep them moist but not soggy wet and they will be fine until at least March. I don't usually plant here until the first of April but this has been a rather wacky winter so you may well be able to do it in March.

Yes, if you have heavy soil (clay content), you shouldn't dig it or step on it while it's wet. Be sure it's dry enough that clods break rather than dent when struck with the spade.

It would really help if people would admit to living in a rather specific location.

Spring doesn't really go by zones. It goes much more by latitude. So 6b suburban Boston gets spring at pretty much the same time I do. While 6b southern Appalachians is going to be much earlier. Without knowing where this 6b is, it's impossible to tell how much too early it is to plant roses, so to give any reasonable information on how to hold them until then.

Tell us how they were packaged. In a box? In a bag? Potted with soil? Some other way?

RE: Can I plant now?

I'm in 6b/7a in the southern Appalachians. Far SW North Carolina. The plants are potted (1 gallon) and bagged.

I hate it when these places sell plants too early. The soil is wet with all the rain lately. Also, it's been very warm this winter (except this weekend - teens). So, soil is pliable, but wet.
