vibrant pink roses for the south

Hello all,

I promised my mother for her birthday i would get her a rose bush with pink roses instead of getting her cuttings from the store every year. She really likes vibrant pink ones, someone suggested i grow knockouts. Does anyone have any other suggestions besides those? The area i will be growing them gets a majority of filtered light from some tall trees overhead, but some direct light in the morning and at dusk.

I am planning on getting a rose root stock in the next month once the frost has passed.

great! thank you for the tips, i went with Belinda's Dream as i found a grouping of them on ebay.

Belinda's Dream should be good in Georgia, but it is light pink. Perfume Delight will require regular fungicide spray in the South. I would suggest Earth Song or Country Dancer. CD is somewhat shade tolerant, but does not have the shape of florist roses, if she is expecting that.

Michael, BD here is a medium pink, even darker in cooler weather. To my eye, Clotilde Soupert and Quietness are light pink, but I have found soil and sun contribute to depth of color. My L. PHillipes in full all day sun are a silvery light red leaning to pink. In shade, they are a deep blood red.

Stick with Belinda's Dream. Just be carefull about what you get on e-bay. Especially live plants. There is a mail order rose nursery over in Laurens, S.C. called Roses Unlimited that sells TOP quality roses. I know they carry Belinda's Dream in 1 gal. pots with a good root system.

Chamblees [as is ARE] is top flight. They sell Belinda's Dream for under $10 in a gallon pot. Super nursery - I live 2 hours from them and go as much as I can. They have a Buck rose called American Legacy that is a bright pink. Check out their website - they have lots to choose from.

Look also at 'Eutin' which is an old, old Kordes rose with excellent disease resistance. I believe it is quite durable in the south. One stem makes a wonderful quick bouquet as well.

Perhaps 'Betty Prior', which was so successful for Rosebud in Georgia, who was a poster on this forum for many years.

Then there is a bright magenta old China with a fruit punch fragrance that is a classic pass-along rose in the south, easily rooted from cuttings, Louis-Philippe.

These are all easy-care roses in the Knock Out vein, all around long before Knock Out.

How about Rouge Royale? Or Electron? I also love the Dark Lady.

She want be disappointed in Electron. This rose is a show stopper the pink is so bright it glows.

Edited: I just noticed you have already chosen your rose. I also realized that the conditions you have listed sound like quite a bit of shade. I think you might give Rose de Rescht a try if Belinda doesn't work out. She tolerates shade better than most.

Well you can't go wrong with Belinda's Dream. Once they get going you will have huge full pink blooms, yes they are on the lighter side, but they also smells so amazing.

Wow great feedback, thank you for all the suggestions... i have additionally bided on Quietness and Rose de Rescht roses. I Couldnt find the others for a good deal online... Here locally in North Georgia most places want $30+ for a small root system of a rose bush. If anyone has tips on other shade tolerant ones i would greatly appreciate it.

Hi dirt, you may want to try Autumn Hill Nursery in Woodstock. They carry a lot of roses. Most of the big box stores have limited varieties. I usually buy mail order. Roses Unlimited, as suggested above, is a great source. You will get beautiful healthy roses. Chamblees is also a good source. I would be wary of ordering roses off of ebay.

"Belinda's Dream", no doubt about it.
(1992, shrub) 5' x 5', medium pink, very double, repeat blooming, fragrant, zones 5-9
Was developed in Texas.

She is an 'Earthkind' rose.

Below I posted a Tulsa, Oklahoma website about Earthkind Roses, that gives specific information about growing and etc. Excellent information. No pics, but very accurate descriptions..
