Speckled canes--prune or leave?

A lot of my rose bushes have red-purply speckled canes that are probably BS. When I prune, do I cut down all of the speckled canes even if the pith is a nice creamy white? Or do I just remove what I typically do in spring? Will spraying with Mancozeb and Banner Maxx eventually take care of the problem? Winter was warm and I can't ever remember having this problem so extreme with the pith so good. Thanks in advance.

If the cane is no good, it won't be 100% creamy in the inside of the cane. You don't want any discoloration at all.

Reddish speckles on green bark can be blackspot, or nascent canker, or some relatively harmless fungus, or just a sign that a maturing cane is changing color from green to brown.

If you begin spraying Banner or Bayer when the new leaves expand, you will have near 100% control of blackspot regardless of how much inoculum is produced from overwintering lesions in the bark. Since you spray, I would advise ignoring the speckles.

For growers who don't follow a fully effective spray program, severe pruning in spring can help control disease. In my experience it can postpone the onset of blackspot by a month or so. Of course, it also delays and reduces flower production.

I was just about to make a post asking the same question (I think) ...what is it, and what do I do about it? Mine is on 3 different roses in different parts of the yard. Is this what yours looks like too?

TNY, that looks pretty bad, probably canker.

My speckles are smaller, more like freckles vs blotches/bruises. I think your pictures are more like canker or more advanced BS on the canes. I do have some of that, too. My speckles may get bigger in the next 2 - 3 weeks and I'll need to re-evaluate the situation. Thanks everyone for your input.

If the bud eyes are good, I leave the cane in place.

I was thinking downy mildew when I saw those purple blotches. If it were me, those canes would be goners as soon as I saw it. If the plant survives, fine. If not, also fine. I don't want downy in my garden because it is so blasted hard to get rid of, once you have it. Takes very expensive chemicals to really kill it. Otherwise, once a plant has it, it usually will just keep coming back when the conditions (cool and damp) are right. But you can control it enough to keep if from spreading to other roses by watching carefully, spraying with the more normal fungicides and getting rid of anything you see that is infected.

Here is a link that might be useful: Downy Mildew on leaves
