I think it is that they are now owned by someone else--not longer an independent operation. But maybe I'm wrong. : ) Kate

J & P sold the name "J & P" and J&P's patents to Park Seed as part of its bankruptcy proceedings a few years back. So what you are seeing now under that J&P name is what used to exist under the name Park Seed, except they now also distribute some J&P patented roses. Completely different company. All the prior J&P employees and knowhow went elsewhere, and Park Seed does not have much to recommend it as a rose vendor in my opinion. Toss the catalog with all the rest of your junk mail.

Word to the wise: Consider the once-reliable J&P to be out of business, now and forever, world without end. Amen. Ignore whatever strategies they (whomever "they" now are) might devise to separate you from your hard-earned resources. Acquire your roses from the few remaining reliable vendors.

A good number of my roses came from Heirloom, the rest were ftom Chamblees and RU. I did get some from JP before they closed. It's just weird getting their catalog. They are expensive too! |

J&P's growing grounds were sold off by a previous owner (it changed hands several times in the past decade). They still employed the noted hybridizer Dr. Keith Zary as of last year (with a title of VP of Research) and presumably he's still with them. The company is now called J&P Park Aquisitions, and is privately held by investors. Their roses are apparently contract-grown in the Wasco area (where Weeks, Star, and others have extensive rose fields).

Yikes, that doesn't sound too good! I just bought a rose from them today (of course, before I discovered this threat), because I wanted another Pope John Paul II (Hybrid Tea) grown own-roots and couldn't find it anywhere else, only grafted on Dr. Huey. Will be interesting what I will get delivered! Christina

Richard -- your information is quite old, and is now wrong. Keith Zary is the head of plant hybridizing for Gardens Alive in Ohio now, and has zero connection with the company using the name J&P. Interestingly, Weeks Roses is part of the Gardens Alive group of companies, but Christian Bedard is the head of rose hybridizing there. Dr. Zary now concentrates his efforts on breeding other plants -- not roses.

Thanks for the update. Nowadays being a year out of date is "quite old" as you say.

You might find the attached history interesting. I think it is accurate, at least as of October 2011, and I don't know that much of anything has changed since then. Zary was at Gardens Alive at that time, and still is.
