I'm getting married this October, and am hoping to grow my own flowers for the wedding (I love gardening and am sentimental). I'm having a hard time getting advice from local florists (understandable) and am hoping someone here can help me. I'd love a bouquet of white roses, hydrangeas, and ranunculus, but don't know what kind of roses to buy for my garden. What kind of rose would do well in zone 8 and also work for my bouquet.?I love the look of Claire Austin, but don't know if I'd still get blooms in October, or if they'd be suitable for a bouquet. Any and all help is greatly appreciated! |

I am no help at all for your zone but I think it's great that you want to use your own flowers. What I would look for is something that has a quick repeat bloom and buy 3 or 4 and trim them at different times so that you are sure to have some blooming for your special day. If you like Pope John Paul II and it will grow well in your zone, that rose blooms often and smells beautiful. Most of my David Austin roses aren't reliable bloomers and especially my white ones. Bolero looks old fashioned and has a good blooming history but mine took a while to get going after I bought it.

I can't help with your rose choice, but you may wish to contact Pat Henry at Roses Unlimited. On the Roses Unlimited home page under the heading of "Looking Back at 2012", Pat tells about the roses that were used for her granddaughter's wedding in June - colors of palest yellow, cream and white. Roses Unlimited is in Laurens, South Carolina, so their zone should be close enough to yours to offer real help regarding blooms for October.

Better yet, if you live close enough to Larens, perhaps you and Pat could arrange to have Roses Unlimited provide roses for your bouquet. Stress is the last thing you need as you approach such a major event -- and I don't want even to contemplate the stress of wondering if newly planted roses are going to settle in and produce in a timely manner what will be required of them. If you choose to go forward with your plan, DEFINITELY you must follow Kitty's advice and purchase multiples of your chosen variety(s) to plant.

Keep in mind that roses are not at their best the first year and may not have lavish bloom at that time when young. They need time to settle in and establish.

I agree with hoovb, 1st year plants will not be performing at their best. My Daughter was married last July and we were doing rose and hydrangea bouquets and centerpeices, we needed over 500 roses and I could never come up with that many we purchased those through a local wholesaler, I have over 10 Anabelle hydrangea bushes so the plan was to use my own, well the drought last summer had other plans! Fortunately, the wholesaler was able to supply them last minute. On such an important day, you don't want to leave anything to chance! Another option for you would be to purchase extra non-dethorned roses and try rooting them. That way you could still (possibly) have a living plant(s) of your wedding roses. Lots of good info here on doing that.

I'm in full agreement with what jaxondel, then hoovb, then t-bred said, the essence of which is this: It's now much too late to puchase, plant and nurture rose bushes that can be harvested for an important event in October 2013.
