Rose Petal Beads

I was just gifted a lovely pair of earrings made from rose petals and I thought the rose enthusiasts around here might enjoy them.

Here's the info that came with the earrings; mine were hand made by a local Herb Society of America chapter with rose petals collected from their own gardens and they smell lovely! I am enjoying a lovely rose scent wafting around me today that's making it feel quite like spring!

"The tradition of making herbal beads stretches back to ancient times and beyond, especially along the old spice and trade routes between the Mediterranean and Asia. Beads were used for a variety of purposes. Some were used for adornment and were often regarded as aphrodisiac, with a magic component to them. Some were used in prayer and meditation. Indeed, the word 'bead' is derived from the Anglo-Saxon 'bede', meaning prayer, and 'rosary' comes from 'rosarium', or rose garden, an ideal place for meditation and prayer that was often a part of medieval churches. The rose, with its singular form and fragrance, has long been a symbol for love, mystery, and beauty. It comes as no surprise that it came to be used to make beads for both religious and secular purposes."

Wouldn't it be lovely to make jewelry to wear from the petals in your own garden?

Hm, I think someone might have dropped a bunch of those beads under my evergreens this winter; it might be cool to try making a rosary or something from them in the spring.

The beads are made the same as rosary beads (which historically were made by nuns from a bride's wedding bouquet. There are lots of descriptions on the internet.

The scent is often added from rose oil late in the process. . Any natural scent in the petals is probably driven off by the heating process that it takes to make the beads.

RE: Rose Petal Beads

When I was a little girl (way back in the 19 hundred and 50's) I remember my mom and aunts talking about rosaries made of rose petal beads made by local nuns in SE WI, the only nuns I remember were Benadictine order. Don't really remember if it was them or not. Have never looked it up. I remember that made quite an impression on me that someone would sit and roll those rose petals till they formed a bead.(all those beads, wow). Then they sold the rosaries in their little gift shop They were dark red beads and I thought they would smell a lot like roses, but I remember being dissapointed that they did not.
I'm glad your earrings smell nice around you, that would be a treat this time of year..,
