SP'd this Spring

So what roses are you giving the proverbial blindfold and cigarette to this year? I've just scraped two inches of ice off the front walk and took another tour of under-performers. To be SP'd this year for me:
Royal Amethyst - I think this rose would do well elsewhere. Three years and three stick wonder here.
Ballerina - I've got two on the North side of the house where they are gorgeous and happy. The one in dawn-till-dusk desert sun gasps all summer.
Passionate Kisses - actually a very good rose, but it just doesn't do it for me. No real reason - it simply lacks personal appeal.
Ebb Tide - to be replaced with Twilight Zone. Hopefully TZ won't have the crispy critter syndrome in the summer that ET does.

Do other folks have their sights on a some in their garden?

Hi pt,
I'm taking out Blue Bayou after 4 years, though it's a big and vigorous bush. The problem is the delicate, "Sterling Silverish" looking blue lavender blooms cannot take our dry heat and fry within hours of opening all summer long. I'm also sp-ing a second Eglantyne of mine. It's a big awkward looking shrub that doesn't bloom enough, and when it does, its blooms also fry instantly in the heat. There are a few others teetering on the edge of mortality, and time will tell if they stick around. Because I'm running out of space, I've had to get a lot stricter with myself about what takes up prime real estate, and what has to go, sadly. Diane

Hi again,
I meant to mention that my Twilight Zone does seem to be able to handle the heat better than Ebb Tide does. I have three ETs and they do well enough that they are safe from the shovel. My Ballerina is in one of the hottest spots in my flower beds, and does very well, so your experience puzzles me. Diane

Diane,
I know it - that Ballerina just isn't doing the job, and I don't know why. I love the other two. Very good news on Twilight Zone - I'm really looking forward to it. And, I should mention, you have lured me again to Edwards - to get that Diamond Eyes. Speaking of SP'ing - out goes Lavender Jewel, in goes Diamond Eyes.

Hi pt,
Yes, indeed, I found myself driving to Edwards--it was beyond my control--the car insisted we go there. Not my fault. When I arrived, I promptly bought two Diamond Eyes, my first quality mini. I've had a few grocery store minis, and they've done well, so what the heck. I also got my Munstead Wood after three years of pining for the thing. This week, I'm traipsing back to Edwards again, this time with a friend. It's hard to stay away. The beautiful blooming bulbs and the gorgeous arrangements in Edwards the Florist are so mood lifting. Saturday, I actually went outside for quite a while and cleared out debris from some beds, folowedl by the trimming off of dead tops on some perennials. I loved it. Diane

I'm hoping a few will just give up the ghost over winter on their own but if not I think I'm going to lose Snowfire, thorny spotty thing, and Black Cherry and Frankly Scarlet, both weaklings that don't ever bloom. American Pride is doing better but the necks are so weak on it that the blooms always face straight down. That bothers me. I don't mind it on other shrubs and DAs but on an HT that just doesn't seem right. We'll see what winter does first before I make the final decisions.

Here is my Ballerina.

Morning sun and filtered afternoon shade. Likes moist, but well drained soil. I add lots of Quaking Aspen leaves and pine needle straw to this bed from the nearby trees.
Blooms from May thru September with only one interruption.
Beautiful tiny red hips in the fall thru winter.

I killed Lilian Austin, Bridal Pink. I gave away Jacques Cartier, Pat Austin (still have 1 left), Scentsational, Love Y'Dad, Queen of Sweden, Charles Darwin, Scepter 'd Isle. Why? They are either thorny, stingy, or I don't like the scent.

I wish I lived near you strawberry hill - I'd take those nasty roses from you! I've been dying for a Pat Austin and being a Brit and a Swede, would love to have your Queen of Sweden., Charles Darwin, and the others.

I don't mind thorns - keeps my dogs and non-gardening humans out of them.
