Which Austins are no longer available?

I know there has been some discussion on this topic but I did a search and other than Pretty Jessica, I didn't see others. I recently tried to order Blythe Spirit from Chamblees and they told me they are no longer allowed to sell it. I just wondered which others are no longer available?

DA has introduced over 200 different cultivars. If you have a premium membership to HMF, you could search by hybridizer and get a list.

My understanding was that the nurseries can sell the stock they still had (although how they would enforce that I can't imagine) and then either sell patented varieties or not, but not both. So if you look hard enough you can find what you want. As for me, I finally decided to bite the bullet on the shipping charges from the only nursery that carries the varieties I want own-root. I would have no problem buying from Austin directly if they did not graft on Dr. Huey as it suckers badly. Good luck and enjoy the roses you find! By the way, I did see Pretty Jessica available on at least one online nursery. |

growing 2010: Which nursery do you order own-root Austins from directly? I just ordered from Austin because I couldnt' find Young Lycidas anywhere. Thanks.

I think Roses Unlimited has Austins on own root. Also Dr Huey has been rumored to be virused.

Several places sell Austin roses besides Austin, Chamblee's, Heirloom, Vintage, RU, come to mind immediatly, and there are others.

I appreciate all of the responses to where to buy Austins, but I really was wondering if anyone had heard of specific roses that were no longer available other than Pretty Jessica. That was the only one that I knew of until I tried to order Blythe Spirit. Are there others that people have heard that fall into the 'can't buy anymore' category?

Pretty Jessica is available at Pickering, I just ordered one. They have lots of Austins grafted on multiflora. A while ago there was a deal going on between J&P and DA, there were a few varieties that were "exclusive" from J&P for a few years, you could only buy those particular DAs from J&P. I don't think they're doing that now.

I get most of my roses from the places hoovb mentioned-Chamblee's, Heirloom, Vintage, RU, plus Northland Rosarium and Rogue Valley Roses. There are a couple more places that have them, but they are grafted so I haven't tried them yet, plus I would probably go local for those.

There has to be a list somewhere, but I haven't found it. If you look up Austin roses on HMF, some of them have a notation at the bottom of the page that says, "One of the English Rose varieties that has been replaced." To my understanding, retailers who license to sell current Austin varieties (those that require payment of royalties) cannot sell the discontinued varieties, or Mr. Austin will revoke their license. It's one or the other, but not both. Connie

I am in Fla. also z 9-10, st Pete, and have been considering buying several Austins, from Chamblee's.... but am not sure how they do in our humid climate.... I'm looking at Molineaux, Wm. Shakespeare, and Tamora.. and wonder how Austins have done for you here....what have you grown and how successful were they handling the Fla. climate ?? thanks, sally

saldut, you might get a better response if you post your question separately. In a separate post, many more viewers will see it. Would advise you if I could. All I can say is those are three good choices for Kansas. But that doesn't help, does it. LOL Kate

I tried to order William Morris which appeared on DAR's internet catalog (at least until recently) and was informed it had been discontinued. I don't think Pickering carries it, although it may be available somewhere still.

Next year David Austin, Texas will be offering own-root roses (for Spring 2011 shipping). I was told they will be comparable in size with grafted ones sold by them. Marina |

Roses in Florida may have to be grafted on a specific rootstock due to nematodes. Teas, Chinas and Noisettes are your best bets.
