Thanks for the link. Interesting to see that the author concluded that RRD would be just another your regular rose disease. Not sure I see any facts in the article that supports that, but I sure hope the author is right.

Henry, I thought the article was very interesting for several reasons. First, it seems to indicate that Knockouts are not the devil after all; they are just so overplanted that they show the disease faster. Second, their statistic regarding the loss of rosebushes due to RRD was in the same general range as the losses from other causes IF and ONLY IF the diseased plants were ripped out very swiftly. At least, that's what I understood. So the takeaway for me is: don't trim sick branches, don't wait and see---rip the bush out and BURN it immediately. Now if the public would just get tired of Knockouts...

The problem with the Knock Outs isn't the rose, it's the fact that most of them are in huge mass plantings that NO ONE tends. They plant them and forget them. Oh, someone may go by in the spring and prune them down with hedge trimmers and maybe if it's really dry throw some water on them (not even that in most cases though) but they're not really cared for. So when one plant does become infected it isn't caught immediately and ripped out and burned. It stays there infecting more and spreading the disease (and the mite that carries it) to more and more places. I know several people who have seen infected plants and notified the business of the problem and still nothing was done. They aren't rose people and they don't care.
