| Hello all,
I'm going to build a natural wood trellis this spring from some hickory wood & place it at the entrance of a fairy garden thats still a work in progress.
(It will be in an area with full sun) Any suggestions on unusual roses that come to mind?

What is the scale of your fairy garden - tiny plants, large plants? What colors will be there. If all of the plants are tiny, you might want to consider a climbing miniature rose. They climb just fine, but the blooms are small. Jackie

Descanso Garden has a "children's garden," enclosed by a hedge. The opening is between a pair of Secret Garden Musk Climbers over an arch, and it's a traffic-stopper. Ever-blooming, fragrant, and disease-free in Southern California. Note that it was not cold-hardy for Paul Barden in one of Oregon's chillier areas, also note that it can be troubled by some blackspot, in areas where that is a big problem. But it doesn't rust or mildew. Bees love it. So do I. Many of the plants now in commerce go back to those two plants in Descanso, and a bit of piracy. Jeri in Southern California

If you don't mind a once-bloomer, how about Seven Sisters? It gets its name from the many (seven+) different shades of color of its flowers. In my experience, from purpley-mauve all the way to white. Sadly I lost my plant in a wildfire in 2003. HMF lists it as pink, but I don't think of it much as a pink rose. It's unique. HMF pics that I think show some of its variability: Melissa

I agree with Secret Garden Musk Climber if you want white. If that's a bit boring for you, then how about something like Climbing Rainbow's End, which will grow over an arch here in SoCal, and can be a non-stop bloomer if you feed it enough. Or maybe Purple Splash, which is also a spirited grower, would be fun. Or maybe Purple Splash AND something white. Kathy

I'm in USDA Zone 8a, and we usually get one or two cold snaps here that give us night temps in the high teens for two to five nights. In these conditions, 'Secret Garden Musk' dies to the soil line every year. Mine has never exceeded four feet tall, since all it can do is make new growth from scratch every spring. If Dublinah is truly in zone 6, as her profile suggests, I could hardly recommend 'SGMC' for her situation; its ability to survive her winters would be questionable, IMO.

SGM is very BS prne too, so if Dublinah is in the east, it is not a good choice. What about Papi Delbard or Aloha Hawaii. Bot are quite healthy here. Olga

Thank you all for the replies & suggestions. The fairy garden is, well, mostly wild plants and trees right now. Shrub roses, ferns, brambles etc. Near the entrance, I have a John Clayton honeysuckle & a small lilac (the name escapes me at the moment). I want to create a more defined path with mulch & rocks from the land, keep most of the native plants & plant a few bulbs here and there for some color. Eventually a garden bench & a birdbath may be added. SGM would definitely not last here in New England though it is a very pretty rose. I like the Climbing Rainbows End; it is similar to one I was eying called "The Magician". Also, along the "wizarding & medieval" line, I like "Alchymist". I think a colorful one and a white one, maybe Aimee Vibert may work well together. :)
