when to prune

This weather here in Louisville KY is fickle to say the least. Cold one day and warm the next. When is the safe time to go ahead and prune back. I also have a couple of roses that I'm going to give away. When is the best time to dig? Thanks. Pembroke

Dig now or when you can work the soil. Prune at your normaltime or you may be writing for freeze advice. It's still winter until March 20.

RE: when to prune

"Conventional wisdom" on pruning time is when the forsythia blooms in your area. For me, forsythia usually blooms at the end of March/early April, so I tend to stick to that time. I suspect that the forsythia may bloom early this year, but I'll still stick to end of March/early April.

Hi Pembroke...I`m in Louisville also and feel your pain with the fickle weather. I am NO expert, but I do tend 125 roses. I will prune my roses toward the end of March. I can work my soil, so I have been moving a few and today will plant the bare roots I got from S & W last week. I will never forget the Easter freeze of 07, so I sit tight. Almost all of my roses are swelling or starting to leaf. Makes me crazy but I still will wait. If I am wrong, please someone tell me. !!!! Lesley

I agree totally Karl and Lesley! I don't care how warm it's been and what the roses are doing I'm waiting until the beginning of April. Which is when I would normally prune. I remember too well that Easter freeze in '07 too, Lesley. I lost 37 roses that spring. I'll never again jump the gun on taking off the winter protection or pruning.

I live in Central Illinois, I was just out and saw a number of small buds coming out. Tomorrow is supposed to be 60. I'm just holding off. I don't want to encourage more growth coming out.

RE: when to prune

I live in Idaho and In Idaho, gardeners must prune their rose bushes annually to control plant size, remove unhealthy wood and keep the rose bush disease-free. Pruning is not time-consuming or complicated, and it does not need to be scary. In Idaho, all types of roses should be pruned in early spring.

RE: when to prune

Thanks for posting this--I saw the first yellow flower opening on the forsythia in the yard this morning and realized that I've never paid attention to the calendar date when I pruned, I just let the forsythia guide me. But they've never bloomed in February before in my memory.

So it sounds like holding off until early April would be best. Mine have been budding/leafing out slowly over the past month, fortunately they haven't gone too quickly and have survived the dips we've had into the teens and 20s. Who knows if they make it through the rest of spring unscathed, but pruning would only encourage them and make it worse. I also remember 07--They were frozen back twice and it sapped their strength having to bud out 3 times. I didn't have any die, but did lose a lot of the size/strength (and blooms) in those plants for that season and the next.

RE: when to prune

I think where you are makes the biggest difference in when you prune. I mean, I am in SW GA and if I wait until end of march, I will be pruning as my first flush is getting going really good! LOL I have been pruning all month long and only have one bed to go (my pots). I have fully leafed out bushes and flowers budding on many of them. I expect my first rose blooms in a couple of weeks......we dont usually have forsythia here in this are but my grandma has two bushes and they were blooming at Christmas. So that doesnt work for us here. LOL
