My first body bag, it is Double Delight and I was too excited to just walk away when it was only $6 and just arrived (the rack was still in stretch wrap).. My problem (& question): the packaging was still wet, so that was great, but as I unwrapped it I noticed it was frozen & all of the wooden particles (like a very fine mulch) were frozen to the roots, the canes are green. I soaked it just long enough to thaw, I put it in the ground & covered it. I have never planted bareroots before, do you think it has a chance for survival? I am expecting 3 bareroots next month & am hoping that this may serve as my "training" so the 3 will have a better chance of survival.

I think it should be ok. How fast did you thaw it? I'm not even sure that makes a difference. You know, I have three beautiful Queen Elizabeths, two Arizonas, and four Double Delights, all of which came in body bags from Orchard Supply Hardware's "bargain bin" looking like a dog's breakfast. Those got me started on my garden 5 years ago, and they are among my best performers and my prettiest roses. Unlike several MUCH more expensive bareroot roses I've gotten from J & P who, once put into the ground, begin to act like Isolde in the last act of the opera, dying for no apparent reason. I hope your DD lives on and gives you many years of happiness. She is a marvelous rose.

Thank you so much for the hope with your own experience! Your Dd is beautiful & I hope mine will be as pretty one day. I only gave about 20 minutes for thawing. I didn't want it to warm up too much since it is still relatively cold here, especially at night. I just thawed enough to get the roots away without breakage, so I could spread them out around the mound. Thank you again!

It sounds like you did exactly the right thing, Rene. I always soak my bare roots before planting them anyway and soaking is the best method for gently thawing something. I do hope that freeze didn't kill it but you can never tell until it's planted. How on earth did you dig soil in zone 7 now? We're under feet of snow here!

Seil, it is on the south side of the house with full sun. DH tried with his post hole digger last weekend with no success, I think it's just the amount of sun this side gets...I guess. Oh Jim, now I am wishing I didn't cancel my BS for Moonstone. They never responded, maybe I will get her after all, she is gorgeous! Thank you both so much for responses and encouragement. My fingers are crossed!

Jim, your Barbra Streisand is gorgeous! The buds look almost purple. wow. Where do you live?

You did all the right things .
