I planted 10 cherry knock out roses in succession, 3 ft apart on the north side of my house, about three years ago, They receive full sun and are get morning sun at about 10 am and throughout the day, until sunset. The roses closest to the East are smaller and each bush beside (or behind it) going West are increasingly larger. I have attempted to water and fertilize the smaller bushes to try and equalize them, but have been unsuccessful. I pruned them severely the prior two years, hoping to "start over" and achieve the even flowering hedge I desire. Does anyone have any ideas about what may be causing them to grow unevenly?

I'll suggest one possibility. Are there some trees on or near the smaller growing end that have aggressive roots that compete for water & nutrients or a tree like a black walnut that puts out a growth inhibitor in the soil? I had a Silver Maple that sent roots out 25' beyond its drip line to invade a rose bed. When I cut it down, my roses did significantly better

Wirosarian, I do have a 30' pecan tree well away from them. However, it IS closer to the bushes on the east than the west, but can't imagine the roots of this old tree are at the same depth of the roses. Thanks for your response! This is the first time I've posted anything on this forum and love the depth of knowledge exhibited.

Hi, Tree roots are one possibility, ground inclination is another as it would affect the water they receive, prevailing wind is a third factor as the roses growing upwind will tend to suffer more damage, proximity to hardscape is a fourth one which can go either way depending on your climate and non uniform soil or existence of a burried rock or burried concrete block a fifth. If I think hard I'm sure I can come up with more potential factors. Of course I left out the most important factor which is the sun they receive since I assume from your post they receive equal amounts.
