Hopefully this is a simple question, although I realize people will probably have varying opinions! I'm looking to purchase a couple of roses online this year for my new home. I would love to buy locally, but the local shops don't carry a very good variety. So are there any online commercial sources that anyone can recommend? Again, I know folks will have different experiences and opinions, but in general, what are the most reliable online companies out there? Any information would be greatly appreciated. :) Thanks!!

rosefire.com specializes in roses for z5. They ship plants in 1gal containers, so shipping can get pricey if you live very far from ohio. The plants they sent last spring grew very well. Kashmir seems to be an outstanding variety. |

mmm....where to begin! I prefer ownroot roses, although I do buy grafted sometimes. My favorites for ownroot are Chamblees, Angel Gardens, High Country, Roses Unlimited, & Hartwood because they offer larger plants (quart & gallons) and their shipping is reasonably priced compared to some others. If you don't mind babying band size roses, I'd go with Burlington or Rogue Valley. For grafted, either Palantine or Pickering... ~Tammy

A lot is going to depend on where you are, and what you are interested in buying. For example, most of the southern nurseries carry few if any truly hardy varieties. So recommending them if you are interested in Explorers doesn't do much good.

Forgot to mention, since you're in zone 5, take a look at Dr. Griffith Buck's roses. He bred them in Iowa to be cold hardy & disease resistant. Also, as Mad_Gallica mentioned, the Explorer & Parkland Series roses which were bred by Canada's Dept of Agriculture to be cold hardy. Even though I'm in a warmer zone, I grow both of these types of roses and am very pleased :) High Country Roses carries alot of the Canadian Roses, and Buck roses can be found at most online nurseries...hope this helps!

marysplantfarm.com is another little-known z5 supplier. They sell ownroot plants shipped bareroot. Their 2012 list will be online soon.

I also vote for Antique Rose Emporium. They send well-established, containerized own-root roses, and they ship very quickly. I've ordered from them multiple times and have always had great service and great plants from them.

For hardy, own root roses, you cannot go wrong with High Country Roses. Plants are large and healthy, and prices, incl. shipping, are reasonable. They have some very interesting looking found roses.

There are a lot of very good rose suppliers on line. It depends on what kind of roses you are looking for. So concentrate on the antique or Old Garden Roses. Some supply the more modern roses. You've gotten some good ones listed here already but there are many more. Generally speaking nurseries in colder climates will carry roses that do well in colder climates and southern nurseries carry the less hardy ones but that isn't a hard and fast rule. But before you purchase any roses you should research them further to see where and how they grow. There is a rose data base web sit that can help you do that called helpmefind(dot)com(slash)roses. You can look up the varieties that you think you are interested in and find out more about them before you purchase. You can also come back here and post them and ask people to give you their personal experiences with different varieties as well as whatever nursery you plan to order them from.

I'm glad to see these other sources for roses. I've purchased most of my bare root roses from Edmunds, some from J & P, the last 8 from Regan Nursery. It seems as though most of these actually came from Weeks roses though. Regardless, I've had very good results with these roses. The only really bad experience I had was purchasing some container roses from J & P; they come in very small containers, and weren't that impressive; "Monkey Business" was almost DOA, wasn't able to revive it; "Sedona" took a long time to develop. Fortunately, I had just ordered 3 roses ! |
