Looking for climbing rose that has nice foliage after bloom

I live in Santa Clara, CA and am planning to make a nice rose garden in an area that is approximately 40' x 20'. I have four arches that I would like to grow roses over. They are about 9' high. I was thinking about the Cecille Bruner but I think it will grow too big and will be hard to manage. I'm looking to find a rose that is pretty like the Cecille Bruner but that has nice foliage when not in bloom that will be satisfied growing to a height of 10-12 feet. I also want to grow them along and 9' high fence. any suggestions will be appreciated. Thanks in advance, VC

My Felecia covered a 10 X 12 span on a geodesic dome and always had nice foliage all year. It took a few years to get that big but in the end it was magnificent.

If you like lavender-raspberry you might like Jasmina. You have to tie up the first canes because they are thin and drapey but after they thicken up in a few years, they quit trailing. Mine makes a few big canes that shoot up every year and the blooms come on the trailing branches above and hang down like wisteria flowers. This rose will go to 12 feet easily.

Do you have a photo of your Felecia on the 10 x12 geodesic Dome? I would love to see what it looks like.

I wish I did. This was before digital cameras and all my film negatives have been lost. Our old dome rotted away some time ago and I had to cut my Felecia back. One big old cane survives and is well branched forming a parasol shape. Currently it is laying on my redwood picnic table. I let it sprawl like that and it touched down on the ground and has rooted. I'm planning to do like you are and put up a support for the new rooted plant and also add to it to form an L shape for the old parasol shaped plant. Together they should look pretty good. The new little one has made 3 good 5 foot canes in a year's time on it's own roots with some help from the mother plant. The mother plant has had flowers well into January. I don't know if it's usual for the canes to be almost thorn free but this one is. I have grown at least 6 of the hybrid musks and Felicia is my favorite.

One rose I am looking into is Lamarque. Everything I hear about it is good. It might be a good choice for your supports and it's a good rose for covering walls and trellises.

Down here in SoCal, Lamarque's a far better -- cleaner -- rose than MAC. I like the bloom better, too.
