Frances Meilland own root arrived

This rose is already monster sized as a bare root. Rosemania sent it. It has big burly roots ( think Palatine) and whoppin' thick canes. In addition to many buds starting all over the canes, little buds are trying to sprout all over the lowest parts of the canes just above the roots. Someone said the size would be like Queen Elizabeth, but I think it will be much larger.

I was just looking at that rose a few minutes ago in Edmunds site. It looks like its going to be a very pretty and elegant rose. I ended up ordering the Meilland Collection tonight which is all ownroot/bareroot. I really like that so many sellers are beginning to offer bareroot/ownroot, esp for those of us who can't really grow Dr. Huey unless its in a container.

I got Frances this year too as well as Passionate Kisses, Dark Night, and Elle. All looked pretty good. Cinnnamon Dolce, which came looking very poor last year, stayed in a pot for a year and just got planted. It bloomed once in the pot but it didn't look much like the pictures. I think I'll make the switch to Rosemania and Rogue Valley next year for my mail order. Hearing good things here about them. I had no idea Frances would be as big as Queen Elizabeth. That's a really big rose. Mary

Meilland always seems to favor vigor and big, strong canes. The ones I saw at Armstrong's were not that impressive. Let us know how it does. I'm thinking of switching out 'Moonstone' for 'Francis' and am interested in how it holds up to Rust.

It went in next to F Mistral ( I call mine Freddie ) and I hope I allowed for enough room. My Freddie is actually 3 planted together so I can take one out if I need too. Freddie can rust sometimes so we will have to see how Frances does next to him. Directly across is Francois Rabelais and how I managed to plant all three roses with these names next to each other makes me laugh. One of the roots was almost 12" long and as thick as my thumb.

Thanks, Kitty, for the report. I love Meilland roses ... they do better in summer heat.
